Wednesdays are happening in the Valley! 

Going down at the new "lover's lounge", the re-invented Coda Bar in Sherman Oaks is the perfect dark and cozy spot to show off the loungey, sexy and sophisticated, Deep Disco, Rare Soul, Acid Jazz and other eclectic musical magic, both brand new and old spun by Veteran Platter Masters A-Ski and Mixmaster Massey. The combined experience behind the turntables of these two goes way beyond 40 years (and the average hard drive...). 

It's a special treat to hear these kind of selectors in the Valley, and on a weeknight for FREE!

This week we are having down a local hero of the 818! Lucas Dodson of Distand Beat will be playing some choice downtempo tracks and other bits of sexy goodness. The guy has been a vital part of the LA underground since the mid nineties. On the weekends you will usually find him setting up his insane soundsystem in some grubby warehouse downtown for a crazy underground party. He also a longtime promoter of his own brand of House Music undergrounds.

Next week 11/18/09 DJ Ezentric of the Blue Monkey, Soul Lounge and Jointz Magazine will be down on one of his rare nights off to drop a chilled out set for the lovers of a good mix. We know he can kill it at 1am and pump a dancefloor but we can't wait to hear what happens when he slows it down and gets sexy, smooth with the mix!

The CODA Lounge has been around for some time but has been recently revamped with a new interior, a new staff, and a new approach. They are really striving to bring some quality nightlife to the Valley. Not in the way that so many spots do, by trying to emulate some stylized idea of a Hollywood club but by providing a sophisticated atmosphere without the pretention. This is why we’re making our night happen here! The spot rises to the top when compared to most else in the area and we’re positive that you’ll really love the place and the eclectic mix that A-Ski and I will craft for you each week.

Aural Fixation at Rush Street in Culver City on Thursdays

It'll be a whole year of spinning at Rush street in a few months. A weekly session of the Serious Moonlight DJ's at this massive spot in Culver City. Seriously, the place is cavernous. In the main space downstairs is a large dining room that is always packed. Upstairs is a large lounge and another bar that is also usually packed. There is a small dancefloor with a stripper pole in the middle of it and a large outdoor patio on the roof out past the dancefloor. We spin in the lounge, next to the bar. 

We usually start off around 9pm and go til 1am. It's not uncommon to have celebrities come through since the place is next door to Sony. The food is really good and the staff is super-cool. 

I play records there at least a few times a month alongside DJ Softcore aka Rick Singer, Ghost Lyon aka Sean Sweeney and DJ Fumiya Tanioku. It always an eclectic mix but much of the night is dictated by the crowd and how far we can take them.

Jazz Technique

Mixed live in 2001 using three Turntables and a Numark three channel mixer. This is a Deep Jazzy House Music mixtape that has turned out to be one of my favorite mixes I've made to date. It's also quite a good remedy for blue moods, this one always cheers me up.

The Halloween Edition of 80's Night At The Scotland Yard Pub Saturday 10/31/09

Get your costumes ready cause the 80's themed, beer guzzling, costume party of the year is Halloween Night down at The Scotland Yard Pub! I'll be bringing the 11 crates of rare 80's vinyl as well as all those creepy themed 80's songs to make up the soundtrack for the night! I'll also be bringing some crappy and some not so crappy prizes for best costumes and lamest costumes. All levels of effort will be rewarded! 

If you come in an 80's themed costume you will get extra credit!

The Daily Pint 80's Night Posters And Flyers 2002 to 2007

One of the longer running residencies I've had thus far was a good five year stint of 80's Nights at the Daily Pint. Running from 2003 to 2008, it started on Thursdays and then moved the night to Tuesdays which is where it stayed for years. 

The Daily Pint is a Santa Monica dive with a lot of charm and not to mention one of the very best beer selections in LA. With so many amazing beers on tap it was hard to make selections (high class problem) week after week. To match the beer selection I would bring an insane selection of 80's. I would bring 10-12 crates with me every week and play weird 80's movies on a series of ever growing screens at the back of the place. 

I had a lot of fun over the years and made some great friends at the Pint. The Bartender and Manager, Robin was always super-awesome to me. I even DJed her wedding.

Record Bag Design

These are examples of a record bag I designed several years ago with my friend Ginger who stitched them together. It's a one strap bag with a flap that flips over the front, closing the bag. Inside the clear flap is a 7inch record which makes the flap rigid. The record can be removed and played as it is help in by a snap. On the back of the bag the color sleeve the record came in is sewn in. There was also a pocket inside. We tried to match the fabrics with the cover art work so each bag, although based on the same pattern looked completely different. Each bag came with a 45rpm adapter!
