We Own The Night is one of only a handfull of events in LA that Astronaut Disco does visuals for. This party is consistently great and always trying to reinvent and out do itself. They give us as visuals artists the room and flexibility to do really amazing shows and the crowd that attends is some the best we've done shows for.
Massive love to WOTN from the Astronaut Disco crew!
Astronaut Disco was in visual support for the Jazzy House Dance event known as JazzMoov. This was the 2 Year Anniversary and featured guest from London Daz-i-kue of Bugz In The Attic. Also featured were JazzMoov resident DJs Mza, Seven57 as well as percussionists E$ and Gato plus Trumpeter Josh Koslow. However the dancers are the real star of this party.
I only do visuals for a couple of outfits in LA and We Own The Night is at the top of that short list. Saturday, February 16 was the LOVE edition. It was a spectacular night where I had the privilege of setting up a couple of projectors plus the overhead projector as Astronaut Disco Visuals to entertain the eyeballs for the dancers all night long. All visuals were collaged with added effects on the spot, to the music. Thank you to The WOTN crew for having me and to Richard E for the help in pulling it all off!
The following is edited and processed video showcasing some of the visuals highlights.
Thes are shots from above dancefloor and from on the dancefloor itself.
The rest of the pictures come from the facebook event posting and I don't know who any of the photographers are but they caught a few other moments I wasn't able to. Enjoy.
Astronaut Disco Visuals again had the privilege to get down with some collaged live, projected dancefloor eye candy for the best underground House Music getdown in LA. Scott K's We Own The Night has defined production value for LA's warehouse and unorthodox all night party space scene.
Enjoy this edited video featuring some of the moments of the visuals throughout the night.
On this magical occasion on Saturday, December 8th, 2012 we did the deal in an old church in downtown LA. I set up three projectors plus an overhead projector in the rafters above the dancefloor and hit two screens, one above the DJ and the other on the other side of the dancefloor. I also blasted the side wall with a wide angled projector to add movement and color to the stone and deteriorating cement wall across from where I was stationed.
View from where I spent the night working the visiuals gear. Here I'm playing with stain glass inspired collages with the overhead projector to pay omage to the history of the space which was once a Methodist church.
This is the view as you climbed the stairs to the main room. I set up a simple slide projector to place the flower on the wall at the top of the stairs.
DJ's for the night include WOTN party designer and LA deep house torch bearer Scott K, opening set from FunkyGraffish and a very special and rare appearance by Chicago House Music Legend and Pioneer Jesse Saunders.
I collaged a combo of personally created animations, homemade stills, found images, found videos, a load of effects all mixed live on the spot with much of the input and motion created live on the spot to suit the music.
Every year the underground Los Angeles DJ and Music community gets together to throw a benefit event to raise awareness and donations for much needed music and arts programs through out the area. This is the 14th year for the legendary Thanks Givends Benefit event. A night of getting down in three rooms in an old church in skid row. The music flowed til 4:30 am!
It gives DJs an opportunity to check out other DJs, promoters to share stories and patrons to check out many of the different tastes Los Angeles has to offer. It’s a bit like an annual reunion for the movers and groovers of some of LA’s vibrant music/DJ scene plus a wonderful chance to give back.
There were 40+ DJs and performers to be heard throughout the night and Astronaut Disco Visuals got down in the main room. We hit two screens and all visuals were live collages, created on the spot, reacting to the music and energy of the dancefloor below.
This video documents some of the best moments from the visuals from Astronaut Disco that night.
These are digitally processed still created from photos taken of the visuals created live and projected over the dance floor and DJ by Astronaut Disco at the 14th Annual “Thanks Givends” benefit event. Each image here has been altered from the original image. To see far off shots that include the dance floor and DJs scroll down.
Here are some far off shots from above and from the dancefloor of the visuals with the dancers and with a few of the DJs including DJ Jedi, Rhettmatic, Al Jackson and Trumpeter Josh Koslow.
Always on the deep underground side of Los Angeles, We Own The Night provided an evening til sunup that was astounding, this time with a festive Halloween vibe complete with costumed revelers.
Astronaut Disco Visuals hung a screen and hit it from the rear with two video projectors and an overhear projector with the WOTN stencil. Richard E and I warped pupils with mildly creepy and sometimes disturbing visuals mixed and effected live on the spot for the entire night to the last song.
Astronaut Disco Visuals at We Own The Night at an undisclosed warehouse location in Downtown Los Angeles on 9.1.12. This marked my third appearance as Astronaut Disco at a WOTN party. The space was a tricky place to set up in to do much of a show. By day the venue is a sreen printing/embroidery warehouse and for this night everything was shoved to the sides of the space and drapery was hung.
I used four projectors and partenr IQ and I did what we could to rear project onto my big screen. There were a ton of pipes and lights hanging in the way so it was really impossible to get a clear shot at the screen. We did hit the screen with some killer content though and the effect from the visuals over the course was effective for entertaining the dancefloor.
To see the visuals in motion check out this edited video featuring different moments from throughout the night's projections.
