Mixmaster Massey
The Basics
My name is Mixmaster Massey and I started to DJ professionally in 1986. Since then I have spent more than half my life either putting on the party or behind the turntables - most of the time wearing both hats. I am passionate about music and have spent over two decades crafting my own style of mixing records together be it on vinyl or with new technologies. For me the dancefloor is a special place and I take my role as the DJ seriously.
It started with house parties and teen clubs in the mid 80's, playing Hip Hop, Electro, New Wave and Industrial Music. At home in the bedroom I experimented with ambient music, mixing records from Eno, This Mortal Coil and the Cocteau Twins. I was beat matching dance records by 87'. By 1990 I was General Manager of the local College Radio Station and launched an award winning music video show on public access called "No Alternative Video" where we created short films to go between very under the radar music videos from bands ranging from Cabaret Voltaire to buffalo Tom. I was also the Dance 12" and Import buyer for Rasputin Records in the Bay Area.
In 1992 I threw the first 3 day rave known as The Woopy Ball which had nearly 6,000 party participants who took over 3 acres of warehouses in East Oakland near the Coliseum called Paradigm Studios. Several more very underground parties continued over the next couple of years, each with their own memories but none of them out did the scope and enormity of the Woopy Ball. This party is truly a legend, read more here.
Throughout the the mid-nineties I played a role in the vital Acid Jazz scene of the Bay Area, holding a few residencies with some major players I also started a family and launched PSM, %100 Independent PlayStation Magazine with a few other writers and designers at Future Publishign.
In 2001 I came to LA from the San Francisco club scene where my talents have never been in more demand. My taste and style behind the decks have found a loud voice in Southern California. From 80's Nights to Acid Jazz/House Music lounges and clubs to Undergrounds. Standout events I've produced over the past decade include 80's Night at The Scotland Yard (running 7 years), Serious Moonlight (with my crew), Jazz Tonic and my latest adventure into sound, The Astronaut Disco Soundsystem. I've also gotten more into the visual side of things, doing all my own graphics and designs, doing lighting and projecting visuals using multiple projectors, both inside and outside.
