The ART + SOUL event I did sound and visuals for this last Saturday was completely RIGHT in the best possible way. Excellent turnout and some fantastic REAL music played live from some serious talent including Maya Jupiter, Aloe Blacc, Amber Mimz, and D-Felic, plus DJs Lucha, Mza, and Seven57! I put together a video showing off what you missed or a re-cap of what went down if you were there. It is also a bit of a showcase of my visuals from the night.
I dropped an all vinyl set of head nodding beats for some of the best turntablist in LA at the February Skratchpad LA at the Blu Monkey. Video and audio come from the ustream camera I set up to webcast the night each month.
Here is a video I created on VOI, the High School program I've been involved in.
In 2009 I helped launch VOI and www.voivhhs.com. VOI is "The Voice Of Verdugo Hills High School", a student-run website, blog, pod-casting, DJ, and media class all in one. This one-of-a-kind program has been gathering steam since its inception and this year we have the largest group of kids enrolled to date. Like so many high schools in LA, Verdugo Hills High School has suffered staggering budget cuts; their arts and music funding is all but non-existent, so three years ago National Board Certified Teacher Allison Conant and I came up with a plan.
We developed a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on technology as a way to communicate whether it be design (using photoshop, etc.), basic digital music production (using Garageband, etc.), DJing software (Scratch Live), basic sound technology, basic web design or the maintaining and the running of a website and blog. We also aim to help the kids in the class to become truly internet savvy.
I am in the classroom regularly giving instruction and guidance in all aspects of the class and have been instrumental in fundraising for equipment. I also help with the class's special events including its final assignment - "Light The Fuse". This student-produced event brings together talent from the students of VHHS and from LA at large in an evening of Hip Hop performances covering the 5 elements of Hip Hop - DJing, MCing, Breakdancing, Graffiti Art, and, most importantly, Social Consciousness. This event celebrates the positive aspects of Hip Hop and urban culture and is an opportunity for the students to create relationships with professionals in the industry.
VOI creates a "real world" situation for the students in which they are encouraged to explore their own creativity while at the same time working together towards unified goals, larger than what they could produce individually. Our DJ's provide music for lunch rallies, football games, dances, and other school events. Since its launch, VOI has become a relevant and important voice for the students. The website tries to celebrate the best of Verdugo Hills High School and podcast about the issues that matter most to the students.
As a DJ, writer, and artist for the past 25 years I jumped at the chance to share my experience and passion for music, art, and media with the next generation - just as enticing was the opportunity and challenge of starting a program from scratch. It's a remarkable privilege to be able to help these kids find their own passion.
Some of the DJs, MCs and podcasters plus the teacher of the class Allison Conant and myself had the opportunity to be on Vibes And Stuff Radio on 12,11,11 and below is the entire segment. You can jump to interviews by dragging the slider to the light blue lines on the video progression meter.
There were many wonderful moments from the last night of Jazz Tonic at The Broadway Bar on 4.20.11 but the most magical was this moment when Food For Thot and Queen Socks performed some spoken word. Music was juggled on two turntables by Mixmaster Massey which set the tone perfectly, flowing a beatless mood under the first half for a piece by Queen Socks and hitting the beats for the second half for a piece by Food For Thot. This was a chill inducing moment that audience and participants won't forget. Please enjoy.
Here is the replay from Jazzercise Meets Jazz Tonic. Live from the East 3rd Street Steakhouse in Downtown LA on November 18th, a night of Jazzy House Music spun by DJ's Seven57, Mza and representing Jazz Tonic, Mixmaster Massey. Eris Rico was on the mic and live sax by Alan. Good vibes, great music and some decent dancers! There is three hours of music here. Seven57 does the first hour and a half and Mixmaster Massey's set on three turntables starts at 1:30ish, enjoy!
In the last hour of Jazz Tonic on this night the "preacherman" MC Prefyx blessed the mic with some echoed out goodness over a set of Acid Jazz and Jazzy loops put together by Mixmaster Massey. A final closing by Jazz Poet and Mayor of Jazz Tonic - AK Toney. A lovely night with some lovely music we are proud to share with you in a couple of different formats. Please enjoy!
You can just stream the audio and video from the Ustream replay on Astronaut Disco and/or download the complete 45 minute set for free by clicking on the link below the video.

DJ Jedi (from the Digable Planets, Def Poetry Jam & The Rootdown) was the headlining guest DJ on another fun, sexy, chill inducing, sophisticated, mesmerizing and glorious Jazz Tonic at the Broadway Bar in Downtown LA. Incredible vibes and some incredible Jazz from almost every corner was heard throughout the night. However don't take our word for it, watch and listen to almost the entire night from the replay of the live broadcast on the Astronaut Disco Ustream channel.
This first 3 hour video is has the opening set from DJ Ghost Lyon, A short set from Mixmaster Massey and the first hour of DJ Jedi's set. Also on the the mic in the video is Jazz Poet AK Toney and DJ Lotus Petal. There is only one camera position for the night to best catch the DJ and entertainment so you won't see much of the 130+ people in attendance! It was a party!
This second video is of the last 30 minutes of the night which ended up being the most magical. If you're going to watch anything, watch this video. Included is some beat juggling and general goodness from Jedi underneath live Sax by Dave Bass, poetry from AK Toney, a little vocal from Lotus Petal and finally MC Prefyx. It gets going good around 3:45. Enjoy!
